East Hull plans get the go ahead
There is still time for local people to give their views on the Holderness Road Corridor Area Action plan, which is now out for consultation, following approval from local councillors.
Starting on 12 March and ending on 23 April at 12 noon, the plan proposes to regenerate a large part of east Hull, with three key areas identified for action - Holderness Road/New Bridge Road, Ings and Preston Road.
Hundreds of local people have given their views at a series of events over the past month and over 150 representations have already been made.
The options for change consist of a minimum, medium, maximum and preferred option for each area for action. Both residents and stakeholders have been involved in identifying the problems and developing the options for change over the past year.
This formal consultation is the next step towards the development of the Area Action Plan (AAP), which will provide a co-ordinated, phased and deliverable plan for bringing forward new developments and other regeneration initiatives over the next 10-15 years.
The preferred option for the area includes:
- over 4,000 new and 1,800 refurbished homes improved green spaces;
- acquisition and demolition of around 1,900 properties to make way for new homes,
- open spaces and community facilities the re-siting of the Archbishop Sentamu Academy into a brand new teaching and learning centre on Preston Road;
- frontage, environmental and parking improvements on Holderness Road;
- improved pedestrian and cycle linkages across the area;
- two potential new primary schools
The aim of the plan is to build a better future for the area, with greater opportunities for local residents to access jobs, education, shopping, community facilities and high quality open spaces.
Mark Jones, head of regional development at Hull City Council said: "The preferred options stage is important in the Area Action Plan preparation process because it is the first attempt to set out in detail how the area could be changed over the 10-15 years. It’s vital that local people get involved and give their views to help us shape the future of their community.”
The plan is being developed by Hull City Council in consultation with the community. Gateway, the regeneration agency responsible for reviving Hull's housing market, will deliver the plan in partnership with its lead private developer Bellway.
