Hundreds of people comment on West Park plans
Over 700 people gave their views on the exciting proposals for West Park at a series of events throughout July and August.
The plans could see £7m invested and the park transformed over the next 5-6 years. The aim is to create a unique and popular attraction for the city by reviving the park's original Victorian splendour, but with a dramatic, contemporary twist.
Proposals include:
- an impressive new entrance into the park and KC Stadium from Anlaby Road, based on the original 1890's design;
- spectacular lighting displays designed to interact with park users and create a talking point;
- exciting public artworks and sculptures;
- a new ‘paddling lake' - four times the size of the existing paddling pool - incorporating an island at its heart;
- restored historic features and bandstand to return a sense of grandour to the park;
- a new, competition standard, skate park and high spec, climbing wall;
- improvements and enhancements for existing attractions including the miniature railway and bowling club;
- novel water features such as ‘eco' canals and fountains;
- idyllic formal gardens and tree lined boulevards;
- innovative new play facilities designed to challenge and stimulate children;
- pedestrian of existing vehicular routes and a new road into the stadium to improve safety.
Gateway aims to kick start the work to improve the park with a £1.4m project for the first phase of work to create the new Anlaby Road entrance. Further phases of work will then be delivered with the local community involved at each stage of the design and planning process and will be subject to further funding bids.
