PERRY STREET FLATS FACE THE BULLDOZER
The long awaited demolition of the Perry Street flats is set to get underway on Monday 19 October thanks to action taken by Hull City Council and Gateway.
The flats were built at the turn of the 20th century. They have been described as an 'eyesore' by local residents and have blighted the west Hull community for years and have been subject to vandalism and arson attacks.
The demolition of the flats is the first step in creating a new public square on Anlaby Road, which will link to an improved pedestrian entrance to the KC Stadium. Work to improve the entrance to West Park is also set to get underway early next year and is part of Gateway's £400m plan to transform Newington and St Andrew's.
Overseeing the demolition and at the wheel of the bulldozer to take the first strike at the buildings on Monday will be Cllr Craig Woolmer and local resident, Steve Carter (chair and deputy chair of the Newington and St Andrew's Regeneration Advisory Board).
Local resident Steve Carter said: “Getting rid of this eyesore marks a significant stage in the transformation of the Anlaby Road area. These flats have been derelict for years and I am delighted to see them being demolished.”
Craig Woolmer, Newington Ward councillor said: “The new square, which has been welcomed by residents during the consultation on Area Action Plan, will be a focal point in the local community and is integral to our overall commitment to creating well designed and sustainable buildings and open spaces and make Hull a great place to live.”
Laura Carr, Interim Chief Executive for Gateway said: “Our plans to revitalise Anlaby Road are a crucial part of our multi million pound regeneration programme. Not only will the plans transform the entrance to the KC Stadium but will also see the whole area rejuvenated.”
Work is expected to take two to three weeks and will be carried out by demolition contractor Sam Allon Ltd. Disruption to the local community will be minimal, although temporary restrictions will be in place on Perry Street to ensure safety, in and around the site. Rubble and waste generated by the demolition will be recycled.
