RESIDENTS DELIGHT AT MOVING INTO NEW HOME AT ST ANDREW'S SQUARE
Local residents Joan and Paul Scaum will officially open the brand new show house at St Andrew's Square, west Hull on 16 July at 10.15am.
St Andrew's Square is a £12m development of 106 environmentally friendly homes and is part of Hull City Council's multi-million pound plans to transform Newington St Andrew's over the next 10-15 years. The £400m plan, delivered by the Council's regeneration agency Gateway, will see over 2,000 brand new homes, improvements for over 3,000 homes, a network of revitalised parks and green spaces, restored historic features and improved shopping areas.
Joan and Paul's home was earmarked for redevelopment as part of Gateway's plans to transform Newington St Andrew's and are moving into one of the new, energy-efficient homes at St Andrew's Square later this month.
After living on Cecil Street in Newington St Andrew's for 26 years, they were keen to stay in the area. When they heard about the plans for demolition, Joan and Paul decided that a new home would be best for them, and the St Andrew's Square development was the perfect choice.
Joan said: “We cannot wait to move in. We keep going and having a look at the progress on site and have shown all our friends and family the plans for our new house. We have had some great neighbours on Cecil Street and are delighted that some of them are also moving to St Andrew's Square so our little community will still be together.
“We just need to sort out now whether the space next to our bedroom will be a walk-in wardrobe or a tool cupboard!”
The couple are moving into a three bedroom, three storey home, which will be rented through Places for People.
Pauline Davis, Strategic Director for Housing Investment and Renewal at Hull City Council said: “This is a major milestone in the regeneration of Newington St Andrew's and shows the promises that were made to the community were true. This site offers the first new homes to be delivered in Newington St Andrew's for over 20 years and illustrates our commitment to transforming the area for the benefit of the local community.”
David Ward, Regional Managing Director for Keepmoat Homes said: “The Woodcock Street area had become really run-down, with many houses being abandoned and vandalism and anti-social behaviour becoming a real problem. Keepmoat Homes has partnered Gateway in the regeneration programme and the new homes at St Andrew's Square are making the area more safe and attractive.”
Councillor Rick Welton, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration at Hull City Council said: “I am delighted to see the first residents moving into St Andrew's Square. This development is a key part of the plans to transform the area and is quickly being followed by another 148 new homes the Amy Johnson development.”
Nilam Buchanan, Regional Development Manager said the development is good news for Kingston upon Hull: "This is a major boost for the area. We have a large presence in the City, with over 2,000 homes, and are committed to ensuring the ongoing regeneration of Newington St Andrews, and offering local people a wide variety of ways to access housing that they aspire to."
