Jean Clixby was one of over 300 residents to benefit from Gateway's refurbishment scheme in Newington and St Andrew's. Jean has lived on Plane Street with her husband Geoffrey for 24 years and her heart would sink at the sight of rubbish scattered around run-down houses.

Following the improvements which saw homes benefitting from new windows, new fascias and soffits, new guttering, new fencing and new gates, properties are now returned to their former Victorian Glory.

Jean comments: "I used to walk down the street and think how bad the outside of the house looked and it was one of those things we were always going to get round to doing. But, when you own an old house, something always needs doing so i kept putting it off.

"When we got the letters about the work we rang up straight away and got the surveyor round. Now it's been done, I'm just so pleased with it. The workmen were fantastic and little snags like windows sticking have been sorted out immediately."

Jean beleives the improvements have restored pride in the area.

She continues: "It's unbelievable what new windows and walls have done. The street looks so much cleaner than it was before and people take pride in it. It is a pleasure to walk down the street now."
